Betty J. McCall, age 86, of Washington, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospital following a brief illness.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 13, 2016 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Father Bernie Weir officiating. Visitation will begin noon Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the St. James Catholic School. Betty was born September 23, 1929 in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of William P. and Hulda M. (Malmberg) Barth. She attended St. James Catholic School and graduated from Washington High School. She later attended college in Chicago to become a lab technician. Betty was united in marriage to William David McCall on May 20, 1950 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Iowa.
Betty has resided in Washington for most of her life. She lived in Clinton County for a short time, and later in Richmond, Iowa before moving back to Washington. Betty was the Activities Director for the United Presbyterian Home and later for Washington County Hospital until her retirement.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church. Betty volunteered at Earthly Blessings and at the Washington County Hospital as a "Grey Lady." She was also an Election Day volunteer for many years. Betty helped as a diving coach for the Washington Swim Team and loved gardening.
She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Meredith and husband Michael of Granite City, IL; son, Captain, USN (Ret.) David McCall and wife Lisa of Old Lyme, CT; son, Commander, USN (Ret.) Dennis McCall and wife Dr. Margaret Stiles of Norfolk, VA; 7 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and brother, Lawrence A. Barth of Santa Ana, CA.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2001; brother, William Barth; and sister, Mary Lou Wilkey.
