Betty Darlene Engle, age 85, of Washington, Iowa, died Friday, January 02, 2015, at the Washington County Hospital after declining in health for the past several months.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with services conducted by Pastor Jim Stiles. Visitation will begin noon Tuesday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Tuesday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the Washington County Hospital Foundation. Betty was born August 19, 1929, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Harold and Hazel (Walters) Griggs. She attended school in West Chester, Iowa, and graduated from West Chester High School in 1947. Betty received her teaching certificate from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. On June 17, 1950, Betty was united in marriage to Dale Engle in West Chester, Iowa.
Betty taught at Center Country School in Washington County and following her marriage she taught at Stringtown Country School south of Crawfordsville. After starting a family, Betty was a homemaker and she and her husband owned and operated the Sport Shop in Washington from 1963 until 1972.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Washington and was a former member of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron. Betty's family was the focal point of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and helping out with her grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending the winter months in warmer climates.
Betty is survived by her husband, Dale Engle of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Kathy Dean and husband Gordon of North Liberty, Iowa; son Rick Engle and wife Lynn of Washington, Iowa; five grandchildren: Lisa Wenger of Washington, Iowa; Phil Johnson and wife Ericka of North Liberty, Iowa; Lindsay Johnson and fiancé Jeff Bowers of North Liberty, Iowa; Jake Engle of Washington, Iowa; Jenna Engle of Washington, Iowa; six great grandchildren: Max Wenger, Ally Wenger, Braylon Bowers, Beckett Bowers, Maddux Johnson, Ellingtyn Johnson; and one brother, Dennis Griggs and wife Adela of Tucson, Arizona.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Carrol Griggs.
