Barbara Ann Steele, age 88, of Washington, passed away Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Halcyon House in Washington, Iowa.

Celebration of life services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2016, at the Morrison Center of Halcyon House. Private family interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund or Paws and More Animal Shelter. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Barb was born November 28, 1927, in Keokuk County, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer J. and Beatrice Eleanor (Dupuis) Peiffer. She attended St. James Catholic School in Washington, Iowa, and graduated from Washington High School in 1945. She was united in marriage to William E. Steele on November 26, 1950, in Washington.

Barb was raised in the Catholic Church and later became a member of the United Presbyterian Church where she was active on several committees. She was also a member of T.T.T. and the Washington Country Club. Barbara volunteered at the Washington County Hospital Gift Shop and enjoyed riding her bicycle and going for walks. She was an avid golfer and was a faithful attender of the Aquasize Class at the Washington Community Y. After the passing of their spouses, Barb and Phil Kneen became golf partners and their companionship grew until Phil's passing in 2015.

She is survived by her son, William "Drew" Steele & wife Phaedra; daughter, Linda Widmer & husband Richard; five grandchildren: Jenica Timmes & husband Tim and their children, Benjamin and Annabelle; Caitlin Gonzales & husband Christopher; Chelsea Steele; Luke Widmer & wife Keri and their children, Ian and Allison; and Christopher Widmer & wife Becca all of Florida. Barb is also survived by her brother, Paul Peiffer & wife Bonnie of Grinnell, Iowa.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband William in 1997; and one sister, Eleanor Dickinson.
