Audrey Jean Goldsmith, age 99, of Washington, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at Halcyon House in Washington.
Visitation will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery at a later date, with Pastor Alyssa Nantt officiating. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County. Audrey Jean (Putman) Goldsmith was born on December 20, 1926, in Washington, Iowa, to John Jr. and Mary (Chalupa) Putman. She attended school in Washington, graduating with the class of 1944. Audrey married Harold Claude Goldsmith in Washington on July 20, 1947, at the bride’s mother’s home.
After graduation, Audrey was employed at the Washington Evening Journal office until 1950. Audrey was a homemaker and answered the phone for Iowa Southern Utilities Company, where her husband was employed as the general manager while living in Wayland and What Cheer. Audrey and her husband owned and operated the Chuck Wagon Café in What Cheer for six years. Later, Audrey worked at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. She worked in the General Surgery Clinic in scheduling, retiring in 1990.
Throughout her married life, Audrey lived in Wayland, What Cheer, Sigourney, and returned to Washington in 1986 to her family home. Audrey and her husband moved to Pioneer Village Retirement in Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas from 2000 to 2005, then moved back to Wayland, Iowa. She moved back to Washington in 2008.
Audrey was a member of the Methodist Church for over 50 years. She belonged to the Eastern Star and was a member of the Ladies Night Out Club in Wayland, the Saddle Club in Wayland and What Cheer, a board member of the What Cheer Opera House, and a volunteer and board member of Hospice of Washington County. Audrey enjoyed family, flowers, gardening, raising quarter-horses, quilting, sewing, cooking, collecting antiques, and reading.
Audrey is survived by three sons: John (Jody) Goldsmith of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jeff (Diane) Goldsmith of Iowa City, Iowa, and Tom (Fran) Goldsmith of Washington, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Tehri Goldsmith of Oxford, Iowa; six granddaughters; one step-granddaughter; two step-grandsons; two great-grandsons; and six great-granddaughters; along with a niece, Deb Putman, and a nephew, Steve (Julie) Putman; and many cousins in the Washington area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; son, David Goldsmith; her parents; sister, Lourene (Howard) Coakley; brother, Wilson (Hilda) Putman; brother, Maurice (Violet) Putman; stepfather, Ralph Hesseltine; nephews, Michael and John Putman; and daughter-in-law, Cindy Goldsmith. Audrey has donated her body to the University of Iowa Deeded Body Program.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to Halcyon House and Hospice of Washington County for their kind and compassionate care.
