Obituary

Alva Melvin "Al" Gamble, age 100 of Canton, Illinois, formerly of Tucson, Arizona, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the Sunset Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Canton.

Graveside services will be held at 1:30 Monday, July 22, 2024, at the Elm Grove Cemetery with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. Military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will be accorded. The family will be present to receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Memorials have been established for Traditions Health Hospice in Canton, Illinois. Online condolences may be sent for Al's family at www.jonesfh.com

Alva was born February 9, 1924, in Industry Illinois, the son of Albert and Iva Mae (Purtle) Gamble. Al was united in marriage to Lois Ramona Wright on December 3, 1955, in Washington, Iowa.

Al served honorably in the United States Army from November 17, 1942 until October 27, 1945. He served in the 4th Cavalry Unit and was part of the D-Day plus 7 and served in the Battle of Hurtgen and the Battle of the Bulge. Following his years of service, Al was a meat cutter for Food Giant Grocery Store for 27 ½ years retiring in 1986.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Wilma Wright of West Chester, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Al was preceded in death by his wife in 1995.
