Allan Karl Kinzler, age 86, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital following a short illness.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 17th at 1:30 p.m. at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. The family will be present to receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Al was born October 10, 1937, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Hilda (Gritzner) Kinzler. Al graduated from high school in Waterloo, Iowa, and later graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa and the University of Iowa. He was united in marriage to Sara Ann Ferguson on August 18, 1962, in Ottumwa, Iowa.
Al lived all his married life in Washington. He was a life-long educator beginning his career as a Physical Education Teacher for the Washington Community School District (WCSD). He was later the Principal of Brighton Elementary School prior to serving as the Assistant Superintendent of WCSD. He was a Driver's Education Instructor and Football Referee for many years. Al taught Social Studies at Louisa Muscatine School until his retirement.
Al was a sports enthusiast cheering for his beloved New York Mets, Cincinnati Bengals, Gonzaga Bulldogs and Iowa Hawkeyes. Al loved history, jazz and creating math puzzles. He enjoyed golfing and coffee with his friends. Al's greatest joy was being a grandpa and great grandpa.
He is survived by his daughter, Anne Claes and husband John of Johnston, Iowa; son, Scott Kinzler of Marion, Iowa; granddaughter, Katherine Hudson and husband Aaron of Des Moines, Iowa; and great granddaughter, Maeve. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Colby of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and brother, Fred Kinzler of Chino Hills, California.
Al was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sara, in 2013; and two brothers, Tony and Richard Kinzler.
