M. Alice Dunigan, age 95, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday, September 03, 2013, at All American Care in Washington following a short illness.
Graveside services will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013, at the Ascension Cemetery in Libertyville, Illinois. A memorial mass will be held at St. James Church in Washington at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials have been established for St. James Church or the Department of the Blind. Mary Alice was born December 6, 1917, in Grand River, Prince Edward Island, Canada the daughter of James and Mary (MacDonald) MacKinnon. She graduated from high school in Grand River. Alice was united in marriage to Patrick John Dunigan on October 1, 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Prior to her marriage, Alice was a sales clerk and later worked as an office assistant to a Podiatrist in Waukegan, Illinois, following the death of her husband. She moved to Washington, Iowa, in 1985 to be close to her daughter Pat.
Alice was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She was a great seamstress, cake decorator and life long learner. She loved to knit and donated hundreds of pairs of mittens to Indian Reservations and local charities. Despite losing her eyesight at the age of 63, Alice learned to read Braille and enjoyed reading and listening to books on tape and continued her hobby of knitting.
She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Dunigan Cody of Washington, Iowa; son Robert Dunigan and wife Joy of Bonnefield, Illinois; son, Thomas Dunigan and wife Robin of Beach Park, Illinois; and three grandchildren: Shannon Cody, Heather Cody and Patrick Dunigan.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1977, infant son Joseph, seven brothers: Herbert, Wallace, Alex, John, Howard, Everett and Wilfred MacKinnon as well as one sister, Margaret Plouffe.
