Alexander Harold "Steve" Stephens, age 93, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, March 16, 2015, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.
Celebration of life services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2015, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Stiles officiating. General calling hours will be held from 12:00 until 5:00 p.m. Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. The family will be present to receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Friday. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Alexander Harold Stephens was born September 1, 1921, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Robert Boyd and Mary (Masson) Stephens. He graduated from Washington High School and attended the American Institute of Commerce (AIC) in Davenport, Iowa. Steve was united in marriage to Elizabeth "Betty" White on March 23, 1943, in Brighton, Iowa.
Steve served honorably in the United States Army during World War II. He was an Infantry Unit Commander for the 30th Infantry Third Division. He was a Prisoner of War for over six months. Steve received the Purple Heart, Croix de Guerre, Distinguished Unit Citation, European Theater of Operations Ribbon with two bronze battle stars the Combat Infantryman Badge and the P.O.W. Medal.
Steve retired from the Army as Major and worked as Postal Supervisor for the United States Postal Service until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Washington and the Masonic Lodge. Steve enjoyed traveling with his wife, hunting, fishing and golfing. He was a dedicated member of the "Frontier Roundtable" Coffee Group.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Stephens of Washington, Iowa; son, Thomas Stephens and wife Carol of Santa Fe, New Mexico; daughter, Lynn Sisler and husband Michael of Galena, Illinois; daughter, Leslie Paul and husband Craig of Washington, Iowa; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Myrla Taylor.
