Obituary
Alberta "Bertie" M. Miller, age 94, of Washington, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield, Iowa.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025, at the Ainsworth Community Church, with Pastor Jason Collier officiating. Interment will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, where the family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Memorials have been established for the Ainsworth Community Church, Institute of Vision Research-Ushers, and Washington County Relay for Life. Bertie was born January 25, 1931, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Marion and Florence (Baker) Smith. She attended New Haven Country School and later graduated from Washington High School in 1949. On June 26, 1949, Bertie married Merle F. Miller.
Bertie was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a devoted member of the Ainsworth Community Church. Over the years, she worked at Gibson Shoe Store in Washington, Wood Insurance in Ainsworth, and served as a cook for the Washington Community School District.
Bertie volunteered as an election poll worker for many years, assisted with the American Cancer Society, helping to establish the program in Washington, and participated in Washington County Relay for Life. Bertie was also a member of the Country Line Women's Club and a proud blood donor. She enjoyed gardening, baking, and crocheting – she was well known for her crocheted flags.
She is survived by her three children: son, Doug (Brooksie) Miller of Maxwell, Iowa, daughter, Jeryl (Ron) McArtor of Winfield, Iowa, and son, Dwight (Michelle) Miller of Ainsworth, Iowa. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Tammy, Jalene, Derek, Ryan, Jason, Joni, Alexa, and Nicole; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Fran Darbyshire of Washington, Iowa.
Bertie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle in 2006; one great-grandson; sister, Ireta Janecek; and brother, Donald Smith.
