Obituary

Alan Lynn Van Houten, age 64, of Brighton, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the Washington County Hospital following a sudden illness.

A memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 25, 2025, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends. A general memorial has been established. Online condolences may be sent for Alan's family at www.jonesfh.com

Alan was born December 28, 1960, in Fairfield, Iowa, the son of George William and Margaret Ann (Harden) Van Houten. Alan graduated from Washington High School in 1979. He was united in marriage to Konnie Jones on September 5, 1981, in Washington, Iowa.

Alan lived most of his life in Washington County, Iowa. He was currently employed at Rodney's Concrete and Construction in Brighton, Iowa. Alan previously worked at Witthoft Farm Supply. He enjoyed rock hunting, coloring and collecting arrowheads. He especially enjoyed attending his grandkids sporting events.

If Alan was to be remembered for just one thing it should be for how generous he was with his time.
If his family, or friends needed him, no matter what, he made the time, especially for his children & grandchildren.
With a hand full of his favorite candy at his grandchildren's sporting events.
Playing air drums on his steering wheel as he arrived to help a family member with car trouble.
Making a house call at anytime day or night to offer gardening advice.
Working hard and, cracking jokes with his best friend Rodney.
With a whistle, a confident strut, and a big infectious laugh, you knew Alan had arrived!
Alan was not the type to show much emotion, but his dedication to give those he cared for the greatest gift he could offer, his time speaks volumes about his character.
Alan gave all that he had to his family, without knowing his time would be cut short, but even if he had known, I do not believe that he would have changed a thing.
Please rest now, knowing your lessons were learned, your love was felt, your generosity was graciously accepted, and most of all your time was NOT wasted.

He is survived by three daughters: Desirae (Nick) McClelland of Sully, Iowa; Samantha (Lance Messer) Van Houten of Washington, Iowa; Chelsea Stottler of Washington, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Baylei (Colten) Arment, Tristin (Tiffany Lewis) McClelland, Makenzie Messer, David Messer, Hazel Messer, Matthew Messer, Alyza Stottler and Zoey Stottler. He is also survived by his sister, Patti Van Houten of Bella Vista, Arkansas; sister-in-law, Charlie Van Houten of Albuquerque, New Mexico; significant other, Lori Grayson of Brighton, Iowa; and former wife, Konnie Jones of Washington, Iowa.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents, George and Margaret Van Houten, and one brother, David Van Houten.
