Wendell DeWayne Eden, age 93, of Washington, Iowa, died Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Halcyon House in Washington. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Rev. Melissa Warren officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the conclusion of the funeral service. Calling hours will begin 4:00 p.m. Monday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Lone Tree Cemetery in Lone Tree, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the United Methodist Church of Washington or the Shriners Children’s Hospital. Online condolences may be sent for Wendell’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com Wendell was born December 24, 1928, in Lone Tree, Iowa, the son of Frank and Anna (Benson) Eden. He graduated from Lone Tree High School and received his Associates Degree from the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science. Wendell was united in marriage to Betty Jeanne Oberman on August 1, 1954, at the United Methodist Church in Iowa City, Iowa. Wendell served honorably in the United States Army from 1954 until 1956. Wendell and Betty moved to Washington on September 1, 1959 where they owned and operated the Eden Funeral Home and Eden Insurance Agency. He previously co-owned the Brighton Funeral Home with Maurice Gould from 1957 until 1959. Wendell was a member of the Washington United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge # 26, KAABA Shrine, Washington Noon Kiwanis, and was a longtime member of the Winga’s Coffee Club. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Washington County Hospital for six years, and was a member of the Iowa Funeral Directors Association where he served as District Governor from 1971-1973. Wendell was a member of the Washington YMCA where he served as Chairman of the Membership Committee. Wendell was a life long Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He enjoyed golfing and playing cards, especially competitive Bridge. He loved playing the card game, Hand and Foot with his grandkids. Wendell devoted himself to his community and to his family. He is survived by his children: Cynthia Spurgeon and husband Terry of Batavia, IL; Kathryn Baum and husband Ethan of Mitchellville, IA; Richard Eden of North Smithfield, RI; and Jennifer Patrick and husband Michael of Bloomingdale, IL; grandchildren: Kathryn (Kohl) Meyer, Julian Eden, Evan Baum, Mitchell Baum, Delaney Patrick; Mackenzie Patrick; great grandson, Brooks Meyer; sister: Beverly Felt of Desert Hot Springs, CA; cousin, Betty Kirchner of Iowa City, Iowa; cousin-in-law, Delores Eden of Iowa City, Iowa; and sister-in-law, Joyce Oberman of Iowa City, IA. Wendell was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty in 2021; granddaughter, Elizabeth Spurgeon; brother, Donald Eden; brothers-in-law, Donald Felt and Richard Oberman; and cousins: William Eden, Robert Eden, LaVon Kirkpatrick, Marion Eden, Hubert Eden, Florence Millsap and Carroll Eden.
