Mary Jane Shaffer, age 88, of Washington, Iowa, died Friday, April 3, 2020, at her residence following a sudden illness. Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time. A public Memorial Mass will be held at a later date at St. James Church in Washington, Iowa with interment to follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Richmond, Iowa. Memorials have been established for St. James Catholic Church or St. James School. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. She graduated from Keota High School. Mary Jane was united in marriage to Robert Earl Shaffer on June 26, 1955, in Keota, Iowa. She worked at St. James School, Washington State Bank, Spurgeon’s, and H & R Block. Mary Jane was an active member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington. She was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, Tuesday Coffee Club and the “Lunch Bunch” Group. Mary Jane volunteered at St. James Church, Earthly Blessings, Washington County Hospital Gift Shop, and at polling stations during local elections. She is survived by three daughters: Roberta Wilson and husband Roy of Kalona, Iowa; Paula Dickinson and Fred Cunningham of North Liberty, Iowa; Glenda Shaffer of Coralville, Iowa; two granddaughters: Kelly Dickinson of North Liberty, Iowa; Kayla Heath of North Liberty, Iowa; great grandchildren: Bradley Dickinson, Bryen Dickinson, Brenna Dempsey, Hailey Heath, Kinsley Heath and Olivia Heath; and her grandpups. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1995; granddaughter, Rebecca Wilson; brother, Michael Lillig; and two sisters, Barbara Lyle and Anna Ruth Altenhofen.
