He married Wanita Owens on June 23, 1951, and they farmed together for 66 years before Wanita’s death in 2017. He cherished every minute of it, from planting to harvest, fixing a combine in the rain, wrangling hogs in the dark, and supporting countless generations of barn cats. Occasionally he was on time for a meal or an appointment and he always had the time and skills to fix anything in the neighborhood that was broken. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and teaching his nephews to shoot cans and bottles. He will be sorely missed by his daughter, Debby Baker (Dick) of rural Cedar County and his sister Alberta Thornton (Ted) of Washington; his lifelong friend, Dale Richards; his honorary brother, Bruce Watson; and his honorary son, Vince Smith, all from Washington. He is survived by his sisters-in-law, Joyce Campbell of Cedar Falls, Sharee Owens of Columbus Junction, and Media Fulton (George) of Washington; and his brother-in-law, Daryl Owens (Pat) of Washington; and seventeen nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, three brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, two nephews, and two great-great nieces.
