Dorothy Lucille Miller, age 97, of Washington, Iowa, died Tuesday October 20, 2020 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. Celebration of life services and interment will be held at a later date. Memorials have been established for The United Presbyterian Home who lovingly cared for Dorothy during the end of her life. Dorothy was born November 8, 1922 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Lloyd S. and Katherine (Butler) Humston. She attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School in 1940. Dorothy married Lloyd Miller on March 15, 1943 in Edmund, OK, prior to Lloyd’s overseas deployment in WWII. During the war, Dorothy managed the A&P grocery store in Washington. Upon Lloyds return from the war they owned Washington Laundry for 22 years. Dorothy also worked as a bookkeeper for Cargill for 10 years and then moved to Sellers Insurance as a bookkeeper for 10 years before retiring. Dorothy was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder and a Deacon. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) and for many years was responsible for placing flags on the graves of Veterans at Elm Grove Cemetery during Memorial Day Week-end. She served on the American Cancer Society Board and was on the Resident Advocacy Board at the United Presbyterian Home. Dorothy volunteered at the United Presbyterian Home and the Washington County Hospital. Dorothy was named “Mother of the Year” by the Washington Fortnightly group. She was an avid walker and could be seen for many years taking her outdoor 2-mile walks from the UP Home through the Washington Square, often times walking twice a day. Dorothy is survived by her son, Don Miller and wife Cheri Miller of Savage, MN; daughter, Debra Ruehs and husband Rick of Poland, Ohio; three grandchildren: Carrie Miller and spouse Rob Salisbury of Orono, MN and her children, Graham and Jonas Bull; Jennifer Hoiska and her spouse Chad of Minnetonka, MN and their children, Abby and Will Hoiska; and Chad Ruehs and his spouse Jessica of Cave Creek, AZ and their son, Noah. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Lloyd; sisters, Lois and Darlene; and brother Raymond Humston. Dorothy will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a person who likely wore out more tennis shoes than Forest Gump!!
