Mickey Bump

Mickey Marie (Doyle) Bump passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday, April 24, 2017, after a brief bout of pneumonia. Celebration of life services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the United Methodist Church in Washington with Pastor Ben Blanchard officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church Wednesday morning. Interment will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery. A memorial scholarship in Mickey and Carlton's name is being set up through the Washington Community School District. Online condolences may be sent for Mickey’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com. Mickey was born July 25, 1925 in Greenville, Mississippi to Hickman Frye and Nila (Nix) Doyle. She was raised by her paternal grandmother and an aunt in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. She graduated from Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Arkansas with a degree in Science. On one of her many bus trips from college to home, she met a young soldier named Carlton Bump; he became the love of her life and they married in 1947. They were blessed with one daughter, Jami. Their union lasted 45 years until Carlton's untimely death in 1993. Mickey and Carlton lived in several states before moving back to Carlton's home state of Iowa. They settled in Washington, Iowa where Carlton taught art for over 30 years and Mickey was a reading specialist who taught many children at Lincoln Elementary. She loved her students and her job but also loved crocheting, reading romance novels, gardening (and her greenhouse), and her cats. She especially loved her family which grew to include three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She had been a longtime member of Fortnightly and a board member of Blair House. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and for many years had helped with weddings held at the church. The last five years of Mickey's life were spent in Oregon near her daughter and son-in-law due to health concerns. However, Mickey's heart always remained in Washington. It had forever been her intention to live out her days in the home she and Carlton had designed and built on West Tyler Street. She will be interred at Elm Grove Cemetery next to her late husband, Carlton. She is greatly missed and survived by her daughter, Jami and son-in-law Alan Sahl of Tualatin, Oregon; grandchildren, Devin (Sarah) Sahl, Courtney Sahl, Stefanie (Cullen) King; great-grandchildren, Finley Sahl and Felix King all of Portland, Oregon; sisters-in-law, Gwyneth Lewis and Mary Bump; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as dear friend Renee Buchholz who helped her out for many years before she moved to Oregon. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
